(Ms. M) I had a great time in Beijing!! I sent you a postcard. I hope you get it before you go on a trip next week.
The weather was fine, and it was warm during daytime. I was surprised to hear that it snowed in Osaka this week.
I can't believe it!
I visited the Great Wall of China, the Palace Museum and some other places where are registered as World Heritage.
I was really excited to see the Great Wall. It is one of the places where I must go before I die. And I was impressed to feel the great history of China when I visited the Palace Museum. One night I had a foot massage. It costs 3,000 yen for one and a half hours. It is cheap compare with in Japan! The other night I enjoyed watching the Beigjing opera.
I had a trouble in the hotel. It was four-star hotel, but the shower was broken in my room. I complained to the front desk, but they never apologized. I felt homesick a little, but I reminded myself that here is China, not in Japan... I have to be patient.
The other day when I brush my teeth, suddenly the water turned dirty brown!! I was shocked, but I reminded myself again, here is China....
Beijing is busy city. I saw many cars, they are still expensive though. Traffic jams during rush hours were terrible.
Many wild drivers was running honking. And I saw many people were riding their bicycles fast and ingoring a traffic light. I felt really scared when I across the street. I thought I can't live in Beijing... Beijing is such a huge city, but it seemed still poor. Many buildings are old and covered with gray dust. People wear dark clothes, and I didn't see any entertainment centers, flowers, supermarkets... It was hard to believe that it is the Chinese capital city. but many buildings are under construction for the next Olympics in 2008. Beijing will change as if it is different city two years later. Old and new, the rich and poor are mixed there. I liked such a mixed atmosphere. China might become democratic after the Olympics.
To be honest, I didn't have a good image about China before I went, but I thought that things which I know was just a little bit of China. It is true that they have many serious problems --for example, the gap betwen the rich and the poor, the pollution, aging of the population etc... Also the difference between Japan and China made me feel uncomfortable sometimes, but all of them are the real China. I thought it is important to go and see for myself. It was good experience to take off my one-sided view.
I want to go other cities someday. I will find the different side of China. It seems a lot of fun!!
